Welcome back to The High Life!
This week, we're diving into what happens when confidence overshadows caution. Meet S.A.L.I.—your ever-faithful (and occasionally exasperated) companion in Solera—and find out why even the bravest Adventurers should think twice before ignoring her advice.
Plus, Highstreet is hiring a VR UI/UX designer, Into the Chaos Gardens returns with Issue #8, and we've got more updates from across the metaverse. Let's get into it. ⬇️
Let's dive in! ⬇️
When the Adventurer first set foot in Solera, she wasn't alone. Every S.I.M. Unit comes with a Synthetic Assistant Learning Instructor—or S.A.L.I.—an ever-present companion designed to help humans navigate this strange new world. But S.A.L.I. isn't just an interface; she's a guide, a conscience, and at times, an exasperated voice in the back of one's mind. She cheers when you succeed, frets when you take unnecessary risks, and sighs (or would, if she had lungs) when you ignore her completely. Some Adventurers treat her like a trusted partner. Others… learn the hard way why disregarding her advice is a mistake.

The Adventurer was too sure of herself when she took on the Titan Truffle bounty. S.A.L.I. had warned her. She had analyzed the height, weight, and musculature of the Shrieking Spores, their brute strength, and their erratic nature. She had urged caution, and suggested alternate approaches. But the Adventurer, impatient and eager to prove herself, dismissed the warnings. How bad could it really be?
Very bad, as it turned out.
The Spore's first strike knocked the wind out of her. The second shattered her great sword. She was left gasping, struggling to move, her ribs screaming in protest. And S.A.L.I.? If she had a body, she'd have been shaking her head in frustration. ANALYSIS: I told you so.
But S.A.L.I. is more than a nagging voice—she's an unwavering support system. As the Adventurer struggled to breathe, S.A.L.I. recalculated, adjusted, and nudged her toward survival. Accessing Second Wind… Prioritizing pain suppression… Enabling recovery mode…
The Adventurer stood again, battered but alive. When she drove her spear through the Spore's throat, securing victory, she felt S.A.L.I.'s silent relief. It wasn't just about the kill—it was about the lesson. Maybe, just maybe, listening to her companion wouldn't be the worst idea next time.
Then again… some lessons in Solera are only truly learned the hard way.
